GOD IS ABLE

Hi all,

Today’s Scriptures focus on God’s ability. We find the word “able” in every one of the Evening Scriptures listed in Daily Light. So our focus today is on God’s ability.

One of my favourite Scriptures concerning this is found in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians: ²⁰ Now all glory to God, who is able, through His mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. ²¹ Glory to Him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen. Eph 3:20-21 NLT

There are times when we “run out” of superlatives. This Scriptures points this out vividly. No matter what we can think or imagine, God is able to achieve infinitely more. We can think of the universe. We know that the universe is not infinite, because only God is infinite. This is a good illustration of the meaning of what is meant here. We can’t comprehend the size of our universe. Even if we could, the reality would be even greater than our imagination.

Another example is our concept of the resurrection and resurrection life. At present all we see is the seed; the “bulb” planted in the ground when you and I die. What will the plant look like when it is in full bloom? We can’t think or imagine its splendour.

The prophet Isaiah struggled with describing the indescribable! ¹ In the year King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a high and lofty throne. The bottom of his robe filled the temple. ² Angels were standing above him. Each had six wings: With two they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. ³ They called to each other and said, "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Armies! The whole earth is filled with his glory." ⁴ Their voices shook the foundations of the doorposts, and the temple filled with smoke. Isaiah 6:1-4 GW

Ezekiel had a similar problem. Reading Ezekiel Chapter 1, we are quickly aware that the prophet was attempting to describe the indescribable. Artists have tried to portray this on canvas. Their attempts are fascinating and beautiful.  The reality of what Ezekiel saw exceeded anything He could think or imagine. It’s impossible for us to get to grips with this.

So when we speak of God’s ability, we are looking at the shallows around the coastline of the ocean which represents God. We cannot think or imagine such an ocean. But even if we could, His reality would be an infinite number of such oceans.

Our meditation takes a look at some of His infinite abilities.

God is Able

What are the things God is able to do? Able to speak and to make it come true. Able to love through the fullness of time. Able to deal with the wickedest crime! Able to fashion whatever He thinks. Able to live with no water to drink. Able to send us to Heaven or Hell. Able to break any potion or spell. Able to live where His people cannot Able to visit the sun when it’s hot. Able to save and He’s able to guard. Able to do what’s impossibly hard. Able to do things miraculously. Able to go where nobody can see. Able to love and is able to free. Able to know what is lacking in me. Able to strengthen and tell us “Be brave”! Able His people to perfectly save. Able to separate people from sin. Able to triumph and always to win. Able to cause all His grace to abound. Able to find that which cannot be found. Able to save those who are longing to live Able to listen and then to forgive. Able to help when we’re tempted by sin. Able to conquer and always to win. Able to save us from stumbling round Able to hear in the absence of sound. Able to know what tomorrow will bring. Able to hide His folk under His wing. Able to laugh and is able to cry Able to see to it, we’ll never die. Able to heal someone who was born blind. Able to bless and to always be kind. Able to raise people up from the dead. Able to give us the heavenly bread. Able to come here and be crucified. Able to live when we know that He died Jim Strickland –  Written 8th  March 2012

THE PROVISION DECISION

Hi all,

All the promises of God are Yes in Christ. In his second letter to the Corinthians Paul stated, ²⁰ For no matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ. And so through him the "Amen" is spoken by us to the glory of God. 2 Cor 1:20 TNIV

At the same time, all God’s promises are conditional. Is this a contradiction? Not at all! God’s promises to the entire human race are made possible to the recipients in and through the finished work of Christ Jesus. We cannot add to them or take away from them. You will find that most of them are “If/then” statements. E.g. If you keep My commands then I will be your God and you will be My people! By implication, if we don’t keep His commands it’s possible that He will not be our God and we will not be His people. It’s a bit severe. But I don’t make the laws. I only have to keep them!

The word “Testament” gives us a clue about this. We get our expression, “Last will and Testament” from this concept. The New Testament is a bit like God’s “will”. In this case, Jesus has signed it at the bottom in His blood. His signature makes it valid. Thus everything God has promised is ours by virtue of Jesus’ “signature”.

The question is whether or not you are a beneficiary? I can’t answer that. It’s a matter for you to settle with the Lord. Check the “If/then” clauses to see if you are or are not!

John Gill (1697 – 1771) in the quaint language of the 18^th century summarised the promises of God as follows:

 1.     There are some which concern the temporal good of the saints; as that they shall not want any good thing; and though they shall be attended with afflictions, these shall work for their good, and they shall be supported under them.

 2.     Others concern their spiritual good; some of which relate to God himself, that he will be their God, which includes his everlasting love, his gracious presence, and divine protection.

 3.     Others relate to Christ as their surety and Saviour, by whom they are, and shall be justified and pardoned, in whom they are adopted, and by whom they shall be saved with an everlasting salvation:

 4.     Others relate to the Spirit of God, as a spirit of illumination, faith, comfort, strength, and assistance, and to supplies of grace by him from Christ: and

  5.     Others concern everlasting life and happiness, and are all of them very ancient, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; are exceeding great and precious, suited to the various cases of God's people; are free and unconditional, immutable and irrevocable, and will all of them have their certain accomplishment.

They are a little difficult to follow. But with perseverance, you’ll find that they are worth reading. I must state that this man’s commentary is excellent. It’s untarnished with the opinions of later commentators. I particularly enjoy this. It’s too easy to comment on Scripture by quoting our own “flavour of the day”. It’s one of my shortcomings. Some 30 years ago, Malcolm Smith pointed this out. He was right.

The Provision Decision

We’re never isolated, though we may think it’s true. No matter where we go to, My God we’re near to You. We know you are more able than a multi-millionaire; That all the money in the world, cannot buy Jesus’ care. When I first started knowing this, I really wasn’t sure. You may do this for others; but I am far from pure. I really don’t deserve it. You’re much too good for me. Perhaps one day I’ll qualify; then maybe You I’ll see! And yet there’s something in Him that still commands our trust. We know that He has made us, from a little pile of dust. And yet the dust has feelings, so desperately we cry! My God I long to be with You. How do I qualify? I know I have to trust You! My life is in Your hands! Teach me how to serve You and follow Your commands. I’ve done this every hour, since I was but a lad. Help me know You love me and make my spirit glad. Your Word tells me I’m holy. Why don’t I feel that way? I feel more like a little boy who’s wandered far astray! So Lord Please help me follow. I cannot trust my mind. For every time I do it, it seems as though I’m blind. Perhaps Lord, Like Elijah, You’ll send me to the brook? Perhaps you’ll send the ravens with food for me to cook? Perhaps there is a widow, already standing by? Perhaps You’ll send the manna which comes from You on High? Lord, teach me not to worry. It doesn't help at all. It shows I only trust myself and not Your Holy call. I’ve looked around at nature. The birds, the flowers, the trees. They surely lack for nothing. You take good care of these! So if I’m feeling nervous about what You’ll provide, Help me look above it. For when I’m at Your side, I’m amply provided for. For clothes and food and drink, Will come to me in such a way that I can never think. In fact there will be plenty. For surely You’ll provide! For You are Yahweh Yireh. Who came to earth and died. Yes! You provided Abraham a sacrificial ram. He didn’t have to slay his son. For You’re the great I AM. You gave him what was needed. And Lord You are the same. You are the great provider, In Christ the Saviour’s Name. So Lord. please take my worries and all my cares and fears. Teach me that from here on in, through my remaining years, That You are the provider of food and clothes and drink. And all of the necessities my mind can ever think! FREEDOM OR SLAVERY

Hi all,

Have you visited a zoo recently? It’s a fun place for people. Lions, tigers, polar bears, snakes, birds and all the other forms of wildlife nicely displayed for us to gawk at. How about the animals? Do they like it there? Oh they look comfortable enough. They get fed regularly. All they have to do is be on display for people. They can’t get out even if they want to.

It occurs to me that there’s not much difference between an animal in a zoo and people in Satan’s lair. They look comfortable enough. But they are locked in and there is no way for them to get out. Of course they can die. That’s an out for sure. There are also other zoo’s who want to buy them. So they get moved to another destination which, in most respects, is much like the one they were in.

Some of them get bought by owners of wildlife parks. This enables them to live as close to nature as they could in their natural habitat. Even so, they were still in a form of Zoo; one that has large boundaries. Within the confines of that Wildlife Park or farm, they are free. But someone paid lots of money for them so they are not exactly free.

It’s much the same for people. We are born into slavery; Satan’s slaves. There is no freedom except within the confines of our own cages. We may even be in one of his human-parks. We are there for his amusement and abuse. We are kept in sickness, disease, prostitution, drugs, thievery, murderers and even denominations. We’ve don’t know that things could be different. There is no way out. We cannot escape, even if we would like to. If we did, where would we go? Who would look after us and feed us? We hear rumours that someone is interested in buying us. Even more incredible, He is willing to change places with us. He becomes a prisoner and we go free. From our point of view it’s magnificent; but what about Him? From His point of view it’s not a good deal at all. A classic win/lose situation. But it’s His idea in the first place. So if this is what He wants to do, who are we to buck the system?

Now Satan is tricked into doing this for millions of his slaves. There is a difference of course. We are only a human and Jesus is God. So Satan gets all excited. He has the Son of God in his domain. Satan doesn’t care how many of his slaves he has to set free in exchange for Him. So what! He has defeated God’s Son and must be next in line to the Eternal Throne.

Then, along comes the third Day. Jesus simply walks out! It’s a bit like Paul and Barnabus walking out of prison! ²⁶ Suddenly, a violent earthquake shook the foundations of the jail. All the doors immediately flew open, and all the prisoners' chains came loose. Act 16:26 GW He’s lived a sinless life so Satan can’t keep Him. Satan freaks out. He’s lost everything. The only slaves he keeps are those who prefer to live with him rather than serve the Living God. They stay behind until the day of judgement.

Our meditation today looks at this in rhyme and metre.

Freedom or Slavery

They treated them like cattle as they carried them away.

Chained up like an animal; and from that very day,

They took away their freedom and treated them as slaves.

Now they had an owner till they fell into their graves.

They sold them in the market place. They had no rights at all!

They didn’t have protection. There was no one to call.

Families were broken up; the husbands and their wives,

Taken to plantations for the balance of their lives.

Utterly barbaric! To work till they were dead!

This was thought as “normal”; at least that’s what was said.

But treating men and women as some sort of beast,

Is taking place this morning from the greatest to the least.

But most of us don’t spot it. We think it is the norm.

To be a slave of Satan. We do not need reform!

We’re monsters of iniquity who revel in our sin.

Enjoying every moment in the devil’s rubbish bin.

All our friends are with us. Their company is fun.

Never mind the fiendish things that all of us have done.

We prefer our bondage and would rather not be free.

Then we meet the Saviour. The Christ of Calvary.

Tell me what He’s saying. Why should I change my ways?

I’ve been so long in slavery! Can there be better days?

Will he smash my manacles? Will He let me go?

It really sounds inviting. But tell me, “Is it so?”

Will He take good care of me when I get out of here?

Do you think He really means that He is always near?

There’s been umpteen liars. Is this another one?

Or when He’s got me out of here, perhaps He will be gone?

I can’t say that I blame them. That’s how I used to be.

Until my blessed Saviour, paid the price for me.

For me it was a bargain. He gave His life for mine.

It still sounds rather crazy, I thought that I was fine.

He’s given me my freedom and so was Satan’s slave;

It seemed to me the strangest way for Jesus to behave.

He took my sin and wickedness. His righteousness I wear.

I had the right to come and go and He was locked in there.

But Jesus had a secret that Satan didn’t know.

Jesus Christ was sinless and had to be let go!

Satan got so angry. He almost blew a fuse.

But the courts of heaven rejoiced at the good news!

Jesus Christ had tricked him out of all the souls of men!

Everyone who loved Him and had been born again,

Stood and gave a mighty cheer. He had done it all,

He made it available to mankind’s great and small!

No one was excluded. But if they’d rather not,

They may stay with Satan and get what he has got!

FIGHT THE GOOD FIGHT

Hi all,

Christianity or being a follower of Christ is not for wimps. This is another of those things we aren't told when we decide to follow Him. Maybe it’s just as well. I suspect that if we could have seen the future at that time, we would have wondered if we could possibly cope.

As a child in primary school I remember singing “Onward Christian Soldiers, Marching as to war; with the cross of Jesus going on before”. An easy song to sing with easily remembered lyrics. I had no idea how accurately the hymn depicted our walk in Jesus!

Paul told Timothy to fight the good fight of faith. Paul knew what he was talking about. He’d been there! All of his life after his dramatic conversion to Jesus Christ on the Damascus Road was one succession of confrontations after the other. “Fight the good fight of faith is what he wrote to Timothy.

But Paul also indicated that God has equipped everyone to fight this fight. In his letter to the Ephesians he wrote: ¹³ Therefore take up the whole armour of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, ¹⁵ and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. ¹⁶ In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; ¹⁷ and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, ¹⁸ praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints. Eph 6:13-18 ESV

There’s little doubt in my mind that Paul was sharing with the people of Ephesus his own experience and method in prayer. As far as he was concerned, this was warfare. These “Prayer tips” may not be in 21^st century language. But guess what? They are more up to date than tomorrow’s newspaper. This is his recipe for fruitful Christianity.

Fight the Good Fight

The moment you’re a Christian, you’re fighting in a war.

You cannot see the enemy, and you’re a little raw.

You haven’t had experience in battling this way.

But there’s no way of quitting no matter what folk say.

The opposition’s sneaky; they operate through friends!

They listen to your comments and focus on your trends.

Their purpose is to stop you from what you may achieve.

If you continue standing in the faith which you believe.

Their tactics are deception, to push you to the side,

Where they can make you stumble into any form of pride.

Their army looks intimidating, powerful and huge.

But it is just a method of evil subterfuge.

They usually begin them by attacking from the front.

They threaten they are powerful and call on every stunt,

To keep you from resisting and make you fall away.

Anything that they can do to keep the Lord at bay!

Their techniques are so tricky; they’ll fight you from the rear.

Anything that they can do to fill your heart with fear.

They know that if you’re terrified, you’ll turn around and run;

Then all of your resistance will be surely overcome.

But you have a weapon that cannot be dismissed.

The Word of God to fight with and they cannot resist,

Its double edged action as it sweeps them all away.

You also have a helmet to wear into the fray.

A breastplate of God’s righteousness the enemy can’t pierce.

A shield of faith to stop the barbs that seem to be so fierce.

A belt of truth to recognise the devil’s wicked lies;

With sandals on your feet resisting your demise.

We have all of this armour. At first we do not know.

But as you gain experience, your confidence will grow.

For you have one more weapon to keep away despair.

That weapon is invincible and it’s the power of prayer.

Even if you’re naked and all your armour’s gone,

It’s prayer that gives ability to keep on keeping on.

You have the blood of Jesus. It’s God’s atomic power.

To bring His people victory each day and any hour.

So Christian, take courage. Defeat will not take place.

Not while you are looking into the Master’s face.

Ask for just a little glimpse of how the chips are stacked.

There’s many more with Jesus and Satan’s seat is smacked.

You can’t be defeated and you must surely win,

Against the devil’s army and the crushing power of sin.

STRANGE FIRE!

Time with Jesus – Sunday 4^th March 2012

Hi all,

God is inscrutable. He is unfathomable. Isaiah expressed it as follows: ⁸ "My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts," says the LORD. "And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. ⁹ For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9 NLT

Why God does the things He does, often defies all human understanding. A classic example is the fact that what looked to us like an overwhelming defeat; a “man” dying on a cross; was actually the greatest victory this world has even seen or known. This is our inscrutable God in action. It has always been so.

There is one thing we can say about God with a reasonable degree of certainty. If He says something, it must be believed and acted upon. “Do not eat of the fruit” illustrates this. Adam disobeyed. We know the outcome.

Moving on down the centuries, we come upon an extraordinary statement by God to Moses. ⁸ "Have the people of Israel build Me a holy sanctuary so I can live among them. ⁹ You must build this Tabernacle and its furnishings exactly according to the pattern I will show you. Exodus 25:8-9 NLT

This is what Moses and his people did. Men have tried to describe the magnificence of the tabernacle - the tent in the wilderness. No doubt they have done their very best. But it’s doubtful if anyone can do so adequately.

God required many things from His people; too many to go into in this short message. There were two I’d like to draw to our attention. The light shining from the menorah was never to go out. Another was associated with the consecration of the tabernacle and furnishings. The details are recorded for us in Leviticus. ²³ Then Moses and Aaron went into the Tabernacle, and when they came back out, they blessed the people again, and the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole community. ²⁴ Fire blazed forth from the LORD's presence and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When the people saw this, they shouted with joy and fell face down on the ground. Lev 9:23-24 NLT

We are told that the fire on this altar was never to be extinguished. It also follows that fire generated by any other method would be “strange fire”. In this morning’s Scripture we are informed that Nadab and Abihu were consumed by fire from the Lord for using fire obtained by another method. It was “strange fire”.

Nadab and Abihu disobeyed a direct instruction from God. The result was their death. Why the Lord did this is not for me to question. All we know is that they had violated a pattern He had laid down. We may not touch God’s Holiness. If we do, we could be proclaiming our own death sentence.

In today’s Meditation we look at “strange fire” in further detail.

Strange Fire!

We have to do things properly, so we can do them right.

The Lord is most particular; and so He shines His light,

On each and everyone of us, to make sure what we do,

Conforms to what’s expected from the likes of me and you.

We see this very clearly in the Scriptures for today.

His priests were consecrated in a very special way.

They’d been through all the ritual for them to be a priest.

Their ministry was starting. At death it would be ceased.

They’d heard all God’s instructions; The lamps must not go out.

They had to keep them burning; of that there was no doubt.

The offering was burned up by fire from on High.

That flame upon the altar; they mustn’t let it die.

It had to be kept burning. seven-twenty four.

Any other fire was acceptable no more.

But Nadab and Abihu; they failed to do it right.

Their incense burner’s fire was “strange” within God’s sight.

It wasn’t from the altar; so they were both consumed,

By fire from the Lord; “it doesn’t matter” they presumed.

Moses told Aaron, the reason they had died.

The holiness of God by their “strange fire” was put aside.

We have to be particular in everything we do.

To violate His holiness means death for me and you!

Much the same thing happened when Uzzah touched the ark. (2 Sam 6:7)

It must not be transported on an ordinary cart!

On the Levite’s shoulders was the place where it should be,

Covered and not visible, for everyone to see.

Perhaps it may be argued that these victims didn’t know,

That what they had been doing would offend the Master so.

But He is God Almighty. We know He does what’s right.

Your or my opinion doesn’t matter in His sight.

We must never violate the “pattern” He has shown;

Even accidentally; such things must not be known.

God is not an ogre. But sometimes He must act,

In ways we find disquieting and very short of tact.

Know that these things happen for reasons in His mind;

Seldom understandable, the cause is hard to find.

But Jesus and His Holiness we never may downgrade.

And it will never happen if He’s constantly obeyed.
